The carry on will go on the belt. If you have any liquids or a laptop they should go in a bin (unless pre-check). 10# bags of macaroni should also go in a bin, and may be subject to additional scrutiny. (Yes this happened to me this month )
Also your purse or wallet or any small bag you have should go through the x-ray machine. Unless you are precheck, any coat will as well.
