Just to add my tuppence worth, I used to work for PeopleSoft which also demanded room-sharing. I, too, strongly disliked the policy. We got to pick our room-mates, which meant the lead-up to any major employee event was a bit like picking teams in the school playground, with people trying to pick 'nice' room-mates while not over-bidding for fear of rejection.... horrible.
I was out at work almost from joining, but PS being such a "progressive" company meant that it didn't make a difference... but it did to some of the straight men I had to share with. Most were fine, but once I got a very cool reception and once downright hostile.
I stuck with it because there was essentially no choice (when I was there the policy changed from 'Employee are ASKED to share rooms' to 'Employees MUST share rooms') but I have to say when I changed job - and went back to the next PS conference with my new company and had my own room - I realised how much it had restricted my willingness to attend corporate events. Of course, flying club LHR-NYC rather than economy LHR-SFO helped too...
