From my experience, the RPU will not follow with a SDC. Its best to call in and make the change. They typically like to use a free RPU from your account and credit back the unused one as well.. As an aside I 0/3 on PS flights in the past several months. Nice find with the R2

Regrettably, both of her RPUs had been committed for the p.s. RT; hence, needed to use the one that had been previously committed. No time to get it credited back and used on the SDC flight. Fortunately, the agent (or really his supervisor based the length of the holds, I would guess).
Still wondering if the "manual" moving of the RPU to the SDC flight was a "one time exception" or following policy. Guess I shouldn't look a gift horse too deeply in the mouth.
