They have a plane #6667(N667UA) that is supposed to arrive from HAM at 12:45 yet isn't supposed to leave on a mother flight until 16:35. Couldn't they just switch the planes and make my original plane go to IAH and the HAM plane go to SFO? How could I request an aircraft swap?
The simple answer is no you can't.
Who do you think you are that can request an airline for aircraft swap so that it can convenience yourself ? President of the US ?
Your flight is only delay for 55 min, many times airline or UA actually had added in extra flight duration time for many flights in case of the particular city pairs often suffer delays due to weather or ATC, so therefore even for a delay departure, it doesn't automatically translate to late arrival, also there are times the pilot can make up some time enroute by requesting a shorter flight route, less taxi time, lack of headwinds, etc, so that a hour late departure will only means 15 min late arrival.
If you want to get there early, why not pay $75 and SDC to an earlier flight ? Problem solved. And if UA indeed decide to do a plane swap, they will do it automatically, it is their decisions, not you not me or anyone else !
