KLCC is just to the north - KLCC is centred around that park, so the closer the better. Chinatown to the West.
Most tourists stay in these three areas and none of them are a bad choice. If you want a more luxurious stay, stay in KLCC.
Thanks for the map and explanation. I had looked at a similar google map on Tripadvisor with the hotel locations mapped, but that map did not have Bukit Bintang outlined, so your version helps me understand the boundaries better. I'm still a little confused about the area on the map to the west of Bukit Bintang and north of Chinatown that is labelled "Kuala Lumpur City Centre" since it is not in the same area as the park which is north of the eastern part of Bukit Bintang.

I always thought the area around Sentral station wasn't that nice? (Think other threads have warned against staying there).
That said, as others have, KL is generally safe.
Thanks for clarifying "central", and I agree about not wanting to stay near the "Sentral" station. I like to be able to walk around, and that does not seem like the area for doing so.
