I know I'm just an n of 1, but I'm not hub-based and a lot of my colleagues and friends got bumped up to Plat and 1K. A lot. I have to take a connection no matter what, so just out of spite for this I booked about $10k on other airlines for upcoming trips [granted, I already requalified for 1K through 2018]. I won't lie, it was out of pure spite for being taken for granted.
I've done something similar. I'm going to easily sail into Platinum for next year, no real chance of 1K unless my needs change in 4Q. I'm EWR-MSP 3 times per month. I'd say 90% UA. I just booked a whole month's worth of travel, maybe $3k, with DL. I book F, so there's little/no distinction between status or none for me on these flights. Combination of my UA preferred flight leaving from A more often and, more importantly, this promotion. DL has better availability for international award travel, so since my status on UA has been marginalized I might as well build up some DL miles....
