I guess this is really an Airport Authority issue, since they're the one providing the gate scanners. First time I tried apple watch BP, it was a no-go. The HKG customs entry scanners worked with it (although I think those upward facing scanners are now disabled) but the lounge and gate scanners all face downwards. There is no space for your wrist beneath the camera.
Additionally I found the BP on the phone was way, way, easier to bring up than the one on the watch.

Tap to show your BP as it comes up as a "close at hand" notification
Swipe down to the barcode.
But yeah its the fact the scanners dont have space for your wrist so you have to fumble to take the watch off and stick it under.
Transit security were like "..." when i showed them my BP and blithered at me in Chinese.
I have no issue with the application / wallet implementation my issue is the lack of thought on the infrastructure. Why have an Apple watch app if its a pain to use in your flagship airport ?
