I think it has to be normal RTs to qualify for the promotion i.e. A to B to a (with connections if needed). I think Delta.dumb doesn't recognize a A-B-C-A RT as qualifying for the promotion. I didn't track mine that closely while I was doing it, but I seem to remember my multicity itineraries not qualifying. YMMV or I could be wrong

My experience was that B-C in A-B-C-A qualified.
