The network quality makes a lot more difference than the device you're trying to connect. If you aren't getting suitable service in the places you go, it's probably time to find a new provider.
It actually can be the device on occasion. My parents (who still use Sprint but will probably switch soon) have a Samsung phone and an iPhone 6; when they come to visit, the iPhone will be stuck on 3G while the Samsung phone will have weak LTE all though the house. I think both phones support all the Sprint bands, so it's definitely not that.
Of course, I probably wouldn't go get a Samsung phone just to cover a few edge cases when switching carriers would likely be an easier/more reliable route.
