That's incorrect.

There are Advance tickets sold on some off-peak Southern trains between Gatwick and Victoria.

(There are also Off-peak Day Returns, though there are not any Off-peak period Returns for this journey.)

Allie Alby - price of an Anytime Return from Gatwick to Victoria is £30.80, so £61.60 for the two of you.
