What I have read from the Hilton App is that if you check in online using the App, you put yourself further up on 'the list' for upgrades. Take that with however many grains of salt you need to. I do know that I have been upgraded after choosing a room. I do know that others have commented on being offered an upgrade within the app while checking in.
