@capam99 - The rates do seem rather high. Smaller rental car companies like Advantage and EZ have Midsize-SUV for around $900, Alamo ~$1,170 and rest are over $1,200. Minivans are much more expensive with the little guys asking for $1,500 and the other companies over $1,700.

One way to save money is to try out different discount codes to see which one saves you the most. You can try https://zalyn.com/ for this. Create an account & specify which discounts apply to you (AAA, BJs, Costco, Frequent Flyer Programs, etc). You'll see all available rental cars with their current pricing. Under each rental vehicle, you'll see a list of coupons. Click a coupon to see how much it'll save you.

For your rental, a quick search revealed the following discounted rates:
1. Minivan with Dollar for $812 (down from $2,196) (if you're a BJs Club member)
2. Std-size SUV with Alamo for $917 (down from $1,070)
3. Mid-size SUV with Thrifty for $934 (down from $1,212)

As @IAHTraveler suggested, the other way to save is to rent from an off-airport location. If you rent in downtown and return at DEN airport, you can get a Mid-size SUV with Budget for $692 and it seems with coupons you'll be able to bring it down to $625. The estimate for an UberX ride to that location is $30-40, so that might be a pretty good deal.
