The two times I've done it, once with Avis and once with Hertz, Avis couldn't "find" the car for almost 24 hours and Hertz waited 8 hours from Monday station opening to actually check the car in. Both made for some nervous times waiting for the emailed receipt to show up.
If I absolutely had to due to an emergency, I would try very hard to have someone with me who could potentially testify as to the time turned in.
