It's one thing to bash UA or AA for one thing or another; quite another to essentially claim they're run by a bunch of idiots.
If giving out free or discounted samples didn't work, companies big and small alike wouldn't do it.
I'm talking about human behavior here. Perhaps I'm alone in assuming that I personally wouldn't buy the seat for the upfront premium if I knew I could buy it for cheaper at the last minute, so long as I was OK sitting in economy. And not once did I claim what you state, unless you are referring to someone else's comment as well.
