It's more about exactly how the seats are becoming unavailable such that an upgrade that was otherwise very likely doesn't end up clearing. This is much more of an issue for those using upgrade instruments (RPU/GPU in particular) vs those waiting for a CPU. I could live with the cheap buy ups if I knew I would be taken care of in most cases when I play the trump card.
To whatever extent the above is an accurate representation of the complaints in this thread, it still doesn't change the basic fact that airlines no longer want to give free upgrades to people paying coach. The old model is going away, right before our eyes. People can either keep screaming or they can accept it and book tickets and/or adjust expectations accordingly.
