I suspect that they may have thought you were possibly more Israeli than British and taken a stance, rather than just looked at the passport. I think it is often referred to as "profiling". A bit like the security people also do at Tel Aviv airport - where on my last visit I got a long and leisurely examination and questioning about why I was in transit through to Amman.
