Whether you are flying MAN-LAX, NCE-SIN, or OSL-SYD, comparisons with the likes of AA, UA, AF, KL, EK, EY, SQ, CX, and many more is wholly relevant.
I have no idea why you view that as London-centric.
I personally found myself looking at JNB routes to either EZE or SCL. What BA can offer from London or EK or CX etc from their bases are irrelevant. What matters to me is a sensible routing with a reasonable product and an affordable and value for money price. I could route JNB-LHR-EZE, but I can see more reasons than price not to do this!
I could also do this via the gulf, but again why would I want to? UK regional connections or Europen starting points may make a different, but if you are not starting from LON, FRA, MAD, AMS or PAR, I doubt you are looking at direct flights.
My point is look at the route and who operates it (which could include feeder flights if you don't start from a hub). What difference does the EK or CX product make, if your journey is VIE to SEA?
