Tethering off a cell phone won't quite do since I need a reasonably fast connection for running several programs simultaneously.

Does anyone have some suggestions if I do not wish to give in to this atrocious price charged by the hotel (on top of atrocious prices for room, board and drinks of course)?

Assuming the hotel has Ethernet ports I'd recommend this USB Mini router which can get your notebook onto the fastest connection possible and then create a wi-fi hotspot for free for all your wireless devices. I use it all the time in my travels for just this scenario, it's my favorite travel accessory.
