Security at the Rutland State Airport has been beefed up, now that federal security personnel have taken over screening passengers and their baggage. Transportation Security Agency employees took up their posts at the airport last week, screening passengers and luggage before each departing Colgan Air flight, according to Nigel Spackman, the TSA manager in Burlington.
The federal government took over the responsibility of screening passengers and baggage at the nation’s airports following the terrorist attacks of September 2001. Spackman said a total of six TSA workers are assigned to Rutland, with a minimum of three workers on duty for each departing Colgan flight. For the average flight, that’s at least one security staff for every two passengers.
