A fare combining QF and EK on one ticket need not be crazy expensive at all. As explained by sharp5flat9, many EK fares permit QF flights on the LHR-DXB legs. A quick search at dates in November shows the lowest EK only is a T fare £611, while the lowest fare allowing QF+EK is U at £846. Not the cheapest for sure, but not crazy expensive either.
Last time I tried something similar it ended up at over £2500 in Y for many similar itineraries...
