Well, in all honesty I'd gladly connect at DOH or LHR on QR or BA any day over a connection to most Indian domestic services in DEL or most other airports there.

I have to doubt this will materialize or, if it does, make money. While the 787 might well significantly lower the cost of operating it, especially now with cheaper oil, it's still a very long haul from any North American gateway and we know that India does not command higher fares in the way that, say, HKG does. Here in PHL, most of my Indian friends and co-workers take the PHL-DOH QR flight, with some still taking BA, DL/AF or LH followed by a connection to wherever their final destination is. Fares generally aren't that expensive.
