I stayed at the Intercontinental Times Square with my wife and daughter. No upgrade, but got a nice room on a mid-level floor. Great location for touring Times Square, Broadway Shows, and access to subways. Breakfast won't be free but there are a number of inexpensive places nearby to get breakfast. We ate breakfast at the bar across the street which was fine. There are also a couple of diners within a few blocks walk.
That said, even though I have never stayed there, I would go with the Staybridge Suites if it is available. It wasn't during my stay. As others have already noted, the suite format with a kitchen is great for families. It is NYC so expect the suite size to be smaller than a typical Staybridge property.
