I'm sure your husband could easily take AA to DEL and then connect to a 9W flight to BOM.
I very much doubt that AA will launch DEL flights out of LAX - an 8000 mile haul. More likely would be ORD (as before) or JFK.
Either way, the only advantage would be if one was taking a nonstop. Once one throws in an additional connection - such as a Jet intra-India flight - the advantage likely shifts back to connecting elsewhere with a carrier offering a better product.
