A transportation network that smoothed the way for millions of trips during the 2002 Winter Olympics also significantly reduced daily traffic, a state official said Monday.
John Njord, executive director of the Utah Department of Transportation, said the comprehensive traffic management plan put in place for the Olympics and resident cooperation reduced downtown traffic by 30 percent to 40 percent.
Traffic in West Valley City and Davis County fell by 20 percent to 30 percent, he said. Truck traffic also diminished along Interstate 80.
