Can confirm this is exactly what happens. It automatically switches to Business matrix when choosing flexible dates for Economy. Economy is wide open but can only be viewed when choosing fixed dates. No Economy matrix at all.

Maybe they do it on purpose to make it harder to find lowest mileage required dates in Economy.
