Avignon is a good transportation base from which to explore Provence. Have you considered visiting Aix or Arles? They are located within a quick 30 minute train ride from Avignon and both are worthy of a day trip.

Marseille is also worthy of a day trip or even an overnight visit. It is located about 1 hour by train from Avignon.
