I would buy in the 8th; easy access to Fauchon.
But since I'm not rich, I'd go with the 6th.</font>
Well,
USAFAN is right above, I do live in the Saint-Germain neighborhood, in the 6th arrondissement (I thought of you today, by the way, as I waited in line to buy bread at Poîlane on the rue du Cherche Midi

).
The 6th is actually much more expensive than the 8th; in fact, it is currently the most expensive arrondissement in Paris (average price per square meter for buildings that are not new).
Below are the average prices in euros per square meter for the 6th, 7th and 8th arrondissements as reported by the Parisian Chambre des Notaires on March 31, 2003. These are
average prices for property in buildings that are not new, so they represent "average" products - your mileage may/will vary!

So, an average apartment measuring 100 sq meters (which is a decent size for Paris - 1076 square feet) would currently cost €580,900 in the 6th (or approximately $684,770). The same size apartment in the 8th would currently cost €440,900 (or approximately $519,735).
