Not sure what kind of employees they are. Are they in uniform? How do you know they are employees? They're definitely not non rev space available pleasure travelers. Those are boarded / upgraded after all eligible revenue passengers.

I fly to TLV every 4 weeks. I always have an upgrade on the flights, and several times now I've been top of the list with seats open, only to find that UAL employees scooped the business class seats.
On the return, I was in middle seat on the exit row. I tried to get out of the middle seat from the time I booked to flight time, and the aisles and windows were booked. When I got on the flight, 6 of the 9 passengers in the exit row were employees deadheading, including all the windows and aisles.
It kind of bothers me that employees are consistently placed at a higher value than paying customers.
