Yes, last time I arrived about a fortnight ago, the immigration queue for the D gates was all of the way back into the arrivals hall (i.e. filling the immigration hall, the escalators & stairs and back into the main arrivals area). I walked along to the next part of the airport and went through an empty immigration area (HBO, of course!)
I tried that, and that wasn't much better when I was there. A similar situation was found when I arrived (FlyBE) at the H Gates and the Immigration desks at that end.
That said, on each occasion I departed AMS (mid afternoon), security was quick as was Immigration ... but that was mid afternoon, mornings and late afternoon/evenings can be very busy.
