I was in NZ a few weeks ago and I used my debit card to pull out cash in Wellington with no issues whatsoever and it is chipless. I used my chipped, Chase Sapphire primarily and never had an issue either, no matter how remote. There are some places, especially smaller retailers, that do not take a card, but you find that here in the US as well.
