Except for Eagle flights and international ones, there's no guarantee which terminal your flights will use. Just because they are in C yesterday today and tomorrow, they may use A or D next week.
That said, 40 minutes is fine if your inbound is on time, and if you do end up not changing terminals, so much the better, but there's not much room for error, especially if you're connecting to another airline, to a flight that seems to be the last one of the day.
Is this on a single ticket?
Edit - I assumed like most DFW connections this was on AA. Or is it on United?
looks like united as op said "same terminal" and obviously ua is capable of being in same concourse in dfw
if all united flying (til den), then 40 minutes is plenty, you'll probably even be on the same plane and gate
ua just moved to new gates at dfw (or are about to)
i've had some iah-dfw-xxx routings on ua, they were much cheaper than the nonstop
so the great lakes flight is on a separate ticket? and if you're without bags i don't see why they couldn't at the gate. maybe give them a call and ask
