Hello! Hoping for advice.

Flying AA 809 LAS-PHL on Tuesday 6/7, leaving Vegas at 1 am. I booked the flight with Thank You points through Citi and stupidly didn't check the seat map before booking. I'm traveling with a friend and we'd like to sit together.

No 2 free seats are together now, only "preferred" and "MCE." Right now the seat map looks like this:
Name: Screen%20Shot%202016-05-06%20at%208.55.07%20PM.png
Views: 3969
Size: 125.9 KB
7 free seats
27 preferred seats
17 MCE

We both have no status on AA.

I realize there's a risk involved, but do you think I should hope for free preferred or regular seats at check-in? I'm not specifically interested in the preferred seats, just 2 seats together anywhere - 26 E & F would be fine! My gut is to wait and if seats continue to disappear from the chart then pony up the extra $61 it will cost to sit together. I don't fly AA often so I'd appreciate anyone's advice.
