When my wife and I were there last year we found the bus system very easy to use.

Our first trip was from the top of the Peak to central and after that one it was easy. Just make sure that you have sufficient change.

I wouldn't *expect* anyone to speak english in HK but every sign is in both languages so it will not be an issue. I think you will find that english is not as widely spoken as you would think.
