The truth is that airlines simply want you put of their way. If there is space on the next flight, you will be on it. That is my experience of 30 years of missing flights.

Air Berlin flight delayed, resulting in missing an AA flight on a separate ticket (booked using avios). Apparently neither AA nor BA would put him on another flight. Had to buy a new tickets (5) for the following day. AA BA and air Berlin are all part of oneworld.

Most experienced commentators on the thread suggest that BA are prone to do this. Regardless of where the fault lies, the OP could certainly have benefited from insurance which covered this situation.
