I'm not a big believer in conspiracy theories. I don't think they intentionally make the seats less pleasant to encourage people to buy upgrades. Particularly since the premium cabins are usually full. So it wouldn't make sense to try to get people to buy upgrades if none are available.

It's simply a matter of responding to customer demand. Some customers (most?) prefer low cost to comfort so squeezing in a couple more rows of seat and dropping the price $5 meets the needs of most customers. We vote with our wallets on what level of service we're willing to pay for.
