I have been able to add someone's name to the reservation on the phone in the past if they are arriving earlier, but they always kept my SPG number / benefits.

You may call customer contact center to add your name and SPG number to your room. Or you can present your SPG number to the front desk upon check-in. Please be advised that only the room you stay in will enjoy Platinum benefit and you will have to pay for all charges of this room.
