At some airports its:

Me: "Thanks"
Hertz: "Ok, wait here while I go get your contract"
So, I have to do the stupid verbal game before they will go an get me the contract (which I don't need or want) and then wait for them to raise the gate.
It should be:
Scan Car, "I see you are PC, have a great trip", gate up.
For those of us who travel a lot, a few hours each year wasted - plus the fact that they are annoying what should be their most valuable customers.
But they would still have to confirm the mileage and gas tank status, and then print your contract, so the second scenario isn't really a valid comparison. As for not needing or wanting the contract, you'd really like to drive out of there with anything on paper as to the rate and terms of your rental? I certainly wouldn't.
