Sadly, UA is correct.

ne earns GPUs (nee systemwides) when one earns 1K. One earns 1K these days by flying 100k miles and spending $12k. What you spent and earned last year got you your current status (and GPUs). The counters all reset on January 1 when we all start from zero again.
