2. Yes, mobile boarding passes are generally available through Apple Wallet with the AC app, or email/SMS. So there shouldn't normally be any need for a connecting passenger on two tickets to check-in at the airport. However, there can be things that will prevent an online check-in, such as being selected for random security screening.

Actually my planned route will be PVG-YYZ-HAV-YYZ-PVG, with PVG-YYZ-PVG on one ticket that has a promo code and YYZ-HAV-YYZ bought as a separate ticket.
On PVG-YYZ I plan to enter Canada for a few days but on HAV-YYZ I'll just be transiting to YYZ-PVG direct.
