The fine print on the back of my card did say I would not get points. Have not purchased a gift card since. Haha
Did you run into a hotel that posted your payment as an adjustment instead of a credit? It's been almost a decade, but I had one where I paid the entire bill with a gift card and the FD clerk posted it as an adjustment, which I think tricked the system into thinking it was a non-revenue stay.
I was able to get it fixed after the fact (and points/nights added), but it took some phone calls with me learning a bit of a lesson about Marriott's systems.
I *think* these days they just swipe them as a credit card. But it's been a couple of years since I've used one.
