This is my understanding of the INTL-INTL connection process at YYZ, too. However, doesn't OP absolutely need to go land-side in order to drop off his bags (and perhaps check-in) for the YYZ-PVG segment? Since OP is not connecting, surely his checked baggage won't be checked through to PVG...
