Yes, you should aim to qualify on segments.

Earning status by level miles is the domain of the long-haul premium flyer.
Everyone else earns status by number of sectors.

In discount economy, like I mentioned to you in another thread, it would be impossible to qualify on miles. The 40,000 level mile threshold (or 60,000 for French residents) would require you to actually fly 160,000 miles (or 240,000 flown miles for French residents) when you are always in 25% earning classes. Unless each of your flights is longer than 5,333 miles you are going to reach Gold on number of segments flown FAR FASTER than you would accumulate the necessary 40,000 (or 60,000) Tier Miles.

Don't be afraid to cut your ties. It's probably best if you just go with whichever airline offers the "best" ticket, which you can assess individually for each ticket [combination of price/timings etc] and don't let status concerns weigh you too much.
