Same offer here, plus double miles on gas/grocery/utilities for 90 days as an alternative to the 5K. I took the latter, largely because Chase Freedom 5x on groceries this quarter has that category locked up for me.
My AF hits this month. Called and was offered annual fee waiver and 5k for $1k spend. Seemed like the trigger was saying you plan to fly American Airline when asked. (he must have asked me 3 times if I plan to fly AA and once I said yes the offers came rolling) I also mentioned something about having a citibank card. (Don't have the AA card but I do have a citibank card-he never asked which one I had
