You really are over-thinking things.

These are "codes", but the letters are not chosen according to any rhyme, reason, or logic. These "codes" do not stand for anything - it is not that airlines go - let's use F for First Class, B for Business Class and E for Economy Class.

Every airline has a table showing how the chosen letters are assigned to broad fare types. [If it seems random it is only because, as an outsider, you won't immediately know the convention that "J" is intended to refer to full-fare flexible business, "Y" is intended to refer to full-fare flexible economy, "G" is intended to refer to deeply discounted economy, etc. But once you can find out what the convention is, then it is no longer "random". There is no intrinsic reason to say "J" must be "full fare business" - BUT WHEN YOU ACCEPT THAT THEY HAVE TO ASSIGN SOME STAND-IN CODE FOR EACH FAMILY, THEN YOU REALLY DON'T NEED TO WASTE TIME WONDERING "WHY DID THEY USE J AND NOT K? OR L?"

An initial choice was done - which of course at that time was "random" - but once that choice has been made and is thereafter rigidly adhered to, everyone can "de-code" the information so it is no longer random. You seem to think there is some random element here - that you could buy a really cheap ticket and then end up with a business class letter "J" for example. This cannot happen. The fare code is, as has already been explained, merely the first letter of longer code which refers to an exact set of very stringent conditions and which has a particular price attached to it. When the airlines load fares, it is via these "fare basis" codes. They know the fare structure in use for their airline, so they will always code a fully flexible business class fare as a code starting with J, C, D, etc. They know that V, R, G, etc, are the lowest, most restrictive, economy codes, so they will always code their most restrictive (and cheapest) fares as a code starting in V, R, G, etc.

You may as well ask - in music, why do they use the letters A,B,C,D,E,F,G to refer to the notes on the scale? And why is "A" this note and not a higher/lower note?

When you build a system, you adopt a system - in this case a fare structure - and all the people who need to know about it will understand this convention and follow it.


(You will notice a certain degree of consistency across airlines, but don't read anything into that. Codes like J, C, D, I are typically used for Business Class. Codes like F, A, are typically used for First Class. Codes like Y are typically used for economy. Hence, you will often see people here on flyertalk use "Y" as a shorthand generic term for "Economy" on any carrier, just as "J" or "C" are often used as shorthand generic terms for "Business".

Don't try to see reason and order where there is none.

Airlines need a handy shorthand way to refer to various "levels" of ticket. As you know, no airline sells economy class at only the one price, and business class at only the one price. On any one flight, everyone will have paid different amounts for what are, effectively, the same seat. In order to be able to "track" all these hundreds, if not thousands, of prices, they cannot do this if they only think of Economy as being "Economy". They introduce various different "degrees" of Economy, from the bargain basement discount tickets which have to be bought weeks in advance, which cannot be changed or cancelled, which attract little or no miles, etc etc. The actual product is the same - the seat you sit in is the same Economy seat that everyone else will sit in, even if they bought a last-minute ticket for 5 times the price of your advance apex ticket - but they need a mechanism to allow them to "differentiate" between these "artificial" different economy seats.

And using different fare codes is just the first step in allowing them to do this.

so, in stead of selling just "Economy", they can now sell the following:

Economy Y
Economy B
Economy M
Economy U
Economy K
Economy H
Economy L
Economy T
Economy W
Economy S
Economy A
Economy O
Economy E
Economy N
Economy R
Economy V
Economy G
Economy X

The differences between these different types of economy ticket are the ones you have seen on the page you linked to above detailing the fare structure.

This allows them to create 18 "virtual" types of Economy ticket, each with different prices. However, each of these can be split down further. Each of these letter codes may have several options within it [full details in the fare basis]. There is NOT just one type of X ticket for sale for most flights/routes, for example. And each of these different types of possible X will have different rules and different prices.


Economy X for instance may be sold in various other configurations

 CAPACITY LIMITATIONS
   THE CARRIER SHALL LIMIT THE NUMBER OF PASSENGERS CARRIED
   ON ANY ONE FLIGHT AT FARES GOVERNED BY THIS RULE AND SUCH
   FARES WILL NOT NECESSARILY BE AVAILABLE ON ALL FLIGHTS.
   THE NUMBER OF SEATS WHICH THE CARRIER SHALL MAKE
   AVAILABLE ON A GIVEN FLIGHT WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE
   CARRIERS BEST JUDGMENT
