You're not paying £450 for an insurance policy, it's a card fee and one of the benefits in insurance.
Something I found when I called to make a claim, is that Amex/AXA can offer assistance during the delay. Fortunately I've not had cause to test this, but it's worth bearing in mind to see if they're any better in dealing with the situation upfront.
