1. If you are connecting onto a city within Australia, you must collect your bag at your first point of entry into Australia. That was most likely why SQ didn't check your bag through because there would be no point.
2. DJ codes are no longer used by Virgin Australia. They adopted VA code and bid farewell to DJ in 2013.
3. MH last year issued a notice to travel agencies that they will no longer check bags through on two separate PNRs. However as MH uses ground agencies at a lot of ports, they might not always follow the rules.
