But the underlying issue is checking bags in the first place. With proper planning most trips should be doable with carry-on ONLY. Informal dress is the norm today!
The following advice (especially for first time travelers) is useful info:
Make a list of the BARE MINIMUM you think you will need--take 1/2 of that.
+1 I'm doing a week long trip in Australia with the smaller international carry on and not checking a bag. Only time I check a bag is when I have golf clubs or I'm with the wife.
