Saturday is actually a slow day at most airports, though it only seems busier because the vast majority of travelers are on vacation and twice-a-year types. Their unfamiliarity with getting through check-in and then security makes it seem like there are more people than on the real busy periods (Monday mornings and all day Friday).
^ Plus the staff on duty generally don't have as much seniority or they'd be able to hold a Saturday off.
