It seems that the conventional wisdom is that it won't be possible to check my bags through to the US. So, the plan would be to fly to MAD, arriving in the morning at 8, claim my bags, take the bus to T1 and check in for my DL flight to the US.

My question now is about the check in process at MAD. Is it quicker than CDG? If I land at 8, get my bags by 8:20, bus over to T1 by 8:40 and start checking in, it should work, right?

That's a lot of IFs for separate tickets and a small regional carrier.

IMO it would be much safer to fly to MAD the previous evening. Have the person driving take you to the airport rather than your hotel (check out in the morning and bring bags), but this requires that you predict when your meeting will end and how bad traffic will be at that hour.
