It seems that the conventional wisdom is that it won't be possible to check my bags through to the US. So, the plan would be to fly to MAD, arriving in the morning at 8, claim my bags, take the bus to T1 and check in for my DL flight to the US.
My question now is about the check in process at MAD. Is it quicker than CDG? If I land at 8, get my bags by 8:20, bus over to T1 by 8:40 and start checking in, it should work, right?

It's tight, you will likely make it but if get to the DL check-in area later than that it is pushing it. The lines can be slow but the DL agents there know about the cutoffs and will be good about getting you through. If I recall you need to check in there at least an hour before the flight. If you make that you will have no problem going through security and immigration and making your flight.
I've always gone to the DL check-in area, even when connecting and I've previously checked in, as they need to see your passport. I've never tried to check-in, go straight to the gate and have my docs checked there, so don't know if that's an option.
